Many of us know The Lord’s Prayer, but just like The Creed, we should recite it with faith and full knowledge of what we are saying. Today, let’s meditate on the main themes in The Lord’s Prayer.
The Lord’s Prayer is shown both in the gospel of Matthew and Luke. Matthew has 7 main petitions while Luke has 5. We use Matthew’s version at Mass and so today in our study. Unlike the Creed where we are making a statement of faith, The Lord’s Prayer is a prayer to God, praising him and asking for His blessings and mercy. Grab your journal – today is a great day to write out your prayer and meditation from today’s study! Copy each statement of the prayer down one at a time. After each one, spend some time praying and writing out what each statement means. What are we saying? What are we asking for?
Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses; as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
