“My Lord and my God”
I am so Thomas sometimes. Like, severely Thomas. I once asked God to send me a sign of roses, not once or twice, but three times. Yes, three (gosh, that’s so embarrassing). I’m so grateful though, that in times of need, God has been as compassionate and tender as He was with Thomas.
Just read John 20:27-29. Yes, Jesus does gently remind Thomas that,
“Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed,”
but notice how Jesus doesn’t scorn Thomas or call him out on his lack of faith right away. Rather, He tenderly guides Thomas to physically experience His presence. Place your finger here Thomas; Do not fear Thomas; believe in me Thomas.
Jesus always gives us what we need. Sometimes that is placing our fingers in His wounded side or sending us a bouquet of roses as an answer to prayer, but sometimes that is simply reminding us that what is written in Sacred Scripture is enough… so that we
“may come to believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and [we] may have life in His name.”
Hear me Thomas, the Son came to reflect the Father’s love for you: tender, compassionate, loving, patient.
Jesus always gives us what we need to lead us back to His father. He is an incredible son who reflects the Father’s love with sweet tenderness when we struggle to have faith in His presence. And for that we must rejoice.
Ask yourself today what it is that causes you to doubt Jesus. The next time you attend Mass, before you receive the Eucharist, pray these words:
“My Lord and my God, I believe, please help my unbelief!”
